Develop the Organization to Eliminate Chaos

All businesses, from the smallest one-person professional office to huge multi-national conglomerates, are organizations. In other words a business is an organism divided into a logical sequence of tasks and roles. On a very basic level, a business can be divided into three tasks:
1. Getting the business
2. Delivering the product and / or service
3. Administration

Each of these tasks can be further divided and sub-divided into many components or departments.

That definition is pretty obvious for executives and managers of the large business but not so apparent for the owner of a small business who just sees an unending multitude of tasks that must be done. Owners of small businesses often describe their job as “putting out fires” or “juggling – trying to keep all those balls in the air” or “wearing many hats.” But that’s a lazy excuse for the chaos that is spinning about them.

If they realized that they were leading an organization comprised of many departments, even if just one or two people were the workforce of the whole organization, they could then see the business as an organized sequence of logical, necessary, tasks and roles. If they were to change their view from that of the firestorm they are juggling to an organization, even a disorganized organization, they would see that it actually is a logical sequence of components. Changing that viewpoint allows the organization to emerge and be developed.

Organizational development is the task of creating order and intention out of chaos. It is one of those jobs that never gets finished because the organization is dynamic, always changing to meet the demands of the marketplace. A process become outmoded as technology or new techniques become available to do the job better. People who know the system leave and new people, with different (better or worse) talents replace them. So the organization is always in flux, never stable. Nevertheless, the more the organization becomes developed, the smoother the business runs, the “fires” become extinguished, allowing more time and effort for the primary tasks of growing the business by satisfying the customers.
