Clint Eastwood, Spike Lee and Hype

What do you think about all the hype concerning the feud between Clint Eastwood and Spike Lee. Spike started it off by asking why there were no African American soldiers in Clint’s two recent World War II films, “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letters From Iwo Jima”. Clint responded by stating he was true to history and that there was a small detachment of African American soldiers serving with a munitions detachment but that they were not involved in raising the flag. He also said that Spike should, “shut his face”.

Spike sparred back but I will not take the time to share what he said. All of this makes for good publicity and Spike just happens to have a movie about African American soldiers who served in Italy during War World II.

I like Clint Eastwood and Spike Lee, and I enjoyed some of the movies they made. Having said that, let me encourage you the reader of this blog to not get caught up in all this hype. I am African American and my father served in War World II and, he was wounded. I know that people of my race made a contribution during that war and so do you. They would have had even greater participation in combat but prejudice in the military was rampant. I have personally listened to stories by a member of the Tuskegee Airmen that are eye opening concerning this fact.

Hype, hype and more hype - everywhere you turn you are battered by hype and publicity. I for one am tired of it - what about you?

Till next time, Jim
