A close friend of mind is experiencing some debilitating after effects from brain surgery that was done years ago. As a follower of Jesus I realize that it is possible for God to heal my friend if He chooses. Years ago I was present in a meeting where a person shared how a child born only with little more than a brain stem actually grew a brain. I believe that in medical science this would fall under the category of medical anomalies.
I have recently started studying the topic of Neuroplasticity which I find fascinating. The idea is that the brain is plastic or malleable – it is able to be formed. Perhaps another impetus to my new interest in this subject was the addition to our extended family of a new grandson Jeremiah who was born with Down Syndrome – I don’t know but this could be a motivator in my study.
The brain has nerve cells called neurons and glial cells which connect to each other. It has been theorized that learning happens when the connections of these cells are strenghtened, and by adding or removing connections, and new cell formation. This is where the term Plasticity comes into play – the brain is capable of significant change.
Scientist use to believe that the brain did not change after infancy but this idea has been proven wrong. For decades now research has shown that new experiences can cause some radical changes in the connecting patterns of the brain.
I believe science is starting to catch up to Biblical revelation of how God can change the normal processes of life. “I will do a new thing” can be an anchor of hope.
I would recommend that in these trying times you believe that God desires for you to find doctors and other medical professionals who have faith in the Lord, or at least are open to the possibility that there is a God who regularly intervenes in the lives of mankind. This could be critical to your quality of life and life expectancy.
Here is a video – note that the brain surgeon is Ben Carson, who is world renown and a fervent follower of Jesus Christ
