Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy September 2008. This was a major part of the economic meltdown during this time period. A court-appointed examiner, Anton Valukas, has found that they used accounting gimmicks to hide the fact that they were billions of dollars in debt and totally insolvent weeks before they even filed for Bankruptcy.

If a person or persons walk into a bank and take money that is not theirs they will be sentenced to jail. This is called bank robbery and it is a crime. Will Lehman Brothers CEO at the time, Dick Fuld, be found guilty of a crime? This same report declares that he was not criminally negligent.

Here is my question. If the CEO in charge of running the company is not guilty of a crime where lying and cheating was taking place not to mention theft, then who is? There is something seriously wrong with a legal system that will sentence a 16 year old kid to 30 years in prison for selling drugs when a 50 year old executive guilty of no less of a crime is not even charged.

The 25 billion dollar bailout of the big three in Detroit was hardly even noticed. They are supposed to make more fuel efficient automobiles with the heavily subsidized loans. I think it is worth mentioning that two U.S. automakers will not touch the money – Honda and Toyota.

Decision Making Traps Traps

Are you working in an organization where leaders are good at making decisions? Are the leaders in your organization able to frame problems to develop effective solutions?

One of the most powerful questions one can ask oneself is Do I make good decisions or fall into psychological traps? Inspiring leaders with good judgment make good decisions.

Are you able to avoid faulty thinking? Do you distort your reasoning ability? Are you able to make better decisions by being aware of your biases?

Before making an important decision, prudent managers evaluate the situations confronting them. They often fall into one of the eight traps of faulty thinking. Some managers are too optimistic and overconfident: They overestimate success and underestimate the range of potential outcomes. On the flipside, other managers are cautious to a fault: They take costly steps to defend against unlikely outcomes.

These are just two of the well-documented psychological traps that ensnare most managers at some point in their careers. Other pitfalls that distort our reasoning abilities and cater to our biases are identified in the classic 1998 Harvard Business Review article The Hidden Traps in Decision Making, by John S. Hammond, Ralph L. Keeney and Howard Raiffa:

• We have a tendency to stick with the status quo.

• We only look for evidence that confirms our preferences.

• We are likely to throw good money after bad to defend our position and avoid admitting a mistake.

The way a problem is framed can influence how you develop solutions. To avoid this trap, you need to reframe the question in various ways to see how your thinking may change based on each version.

It is not always possible to avoid the distortions ingrained in the way our minds work, but we can build in tests to make our decision-making processes more reliable, thus improving the quality of the choices we make.

The Brain Science of Decisions

The inherent functions of the human brain can sabotage our decisions. It takes enormous energy to consciously work through possibilities and risks, so the brain looks for shortcuts. We use unconscious routines, known as heuristics, to cope with complexity and they normally serve us well. But because they operate largely out of our awareness, they also present traps.

Researchers have identified a series of flaws in the way we think when making decisions. They are hardwired into our thinking process, so we often fail to recognize them. This means they can undermine everything from new product development to acquisitions and divestiture strategy to succession planning.

While we cannot entirely rid ourselves of these ingrained flaws, we can learn to understand the traps and compensate for them. The best defense is awareness.

Working with a seasoned executive coach trained in emotional intelligence and incorporating leadership assessments such as the Bar-On EQ-i and CPI 260 can help you become a leader who avoids psychological traps and makes good decisions. You can become a leader who models emotional intelligence, and who inspires people to become happily engaged with the strategy and vision of the company.

Stop Procrastinating It’s Costing You Money
By Cindy Floyd

If you are like so many new home business owners that find themselves procrastinating; it may be because they simply don’t know where to begin, well I have some advice…Stop It. Continually putting off things that need to get done has a rippling effect, not only on your finances but on your self-esteem.

Sooner or later you’re going to feel the effects of your procrastination and it will surly be a much bigger problem then than it is today. Hence it’s important that you learn to stop procrastinating and “just do it”.

Here are four tips to get you on your way to action.

Write down your tasks daily

You should do this everyday. In your day timer list six tasks that must get done today. If you list anymore than six it will seem overwhelming and you will find yourself staring at your list not know where to begin.

And do those six tasks. You must commit to completing each of those every day. I do this at night before I go to bed so when I wake up the next morning I know what my day looks like and can focus on getting those necessary tasks completed.

Make sure they are accomplishable. The one thing most people who procrastinate are guilty of is taking on too much.

Write down your goals

Often people seem to be procrastinating simply because they don’t know where they are going. What is the end goal? Knowing your goal can help you cut your daily tasks into small bites. This is great for organizing your schedule and keeping you on track.

It’s important to write them down. We have so many they can get lost in the day-to-day shuffle. And writing them down makes them real…

Get rid of all those distractions

Working at home can be a challenge for some home business owners. Kids, chores all seem to sneak into our thoughts and seem more important than the boring task at hand.

Set aside a certain amount of time each day and let everyone in the home know that you are at work and can only be distributed in the event of an emergency. Having your own room such as a den or a basement helps to eliminate distractions, but if that’s not possible try some headphones and your favorite music.

And don’t forget to schedule in all those other family and household chores; they need your attention to balance your healthy life.

Take a break

As much as we may all just want to get this done, taking a break for a breath of fresh air can rejuvenate your creativity and help keep you dedicated. I like to break my day up with my different tasks. After I write my article and post it I take break for an apple and some sunshine before starting my forum posts. Or…take that little bit of free time to handle one of your personal chores. It clears the mind and gives you a new perspective.

Procrastination is a very common problem for work at home entrepreneurs. It’s particularly a problem for new home business owners how have been use to a boss giving them direction.

If you dedicate yourself to following these few organizational skills you will find you can get everything in daily and feel really good about all your accomplishments. And your business profits will show it.
